About the Artist
John Winfield is nationally known in the railroad community for his colorful paintings and prints. Depicting locomotives of fallen flags, as well as current roads, in settings that recall the golden age of railroading, he incorporates both the painting and printing processes.
In 1988, John began painting as a hobby. He painted landscapes and there-in developed the unique lighting techniques later used in his depiction of trains and rail-related images. With increased exposure of his work, the demand grew, leading him to combine his artistic and printing skills to produce unique color prints.
The History of Jigsaw Puzzles
The history of jigsaw puzzles is a puzzle, too! Most historical accounts attribute John Spilsbury with the invention of jigsaw puzzles (circa 1767) when he glued maps to wooden backing and cut along geographic lines to create jigsaw puzzle maps as a teaching aid. Other accounts give the Dutch credit for creating jigsaw puzzles a decade earlier. By the mid 1800s, Germany and France were cutting jigsaw puzzles with interlocking pieces. The industrial revolution brought us die-cut puzzles around 1890, and by 1909, jigsaw puzzles were so popular that Parker Brothers devoted an entire factory to jigsaw puzzle production.
Today, we are seeing a revival in jigsaw puzzle popularity among young and old alike. As an alternative form of entertainment in an electronic age, jigsaw puzzles offer a unique say to keep our minds sharp.
