Tip from Outdoor Living Trends:

Want Algae?

I really like the look of things to be natural in my backyard, even when they are not. So when we installed a plastic fountain and it ran for a few weeks and still looked plastic, I tried my friend's trick (she's a master gardener) to grow algae and smeared it with yogurt. It worked last year on my shaded fountain, but it didn't work like I had hoped on my plastic one that sits in the sun.

I think it just burned off or washed off. So instead I just smeared some algae off my shaded fountain that was already covered in algae. It worked the very next day. I guess it just needed to be 'established algae' to get it grow in the sun.

The trick is to leave your fountain on at all times, too. By doing this, you provide moisture for your algae to grow and you also eliminate a mosquito breeding ground by never letting the water stand still.

Also, if your fountain is really smooth, try some sandpaper and rough it up a bit to give the algae or yogurt something to stick to. If you need to start some algae, the yogurt does work nicely in a deeply shaded, moist area.
