About The Artist:
Born in Southern California, Mears was raised in a semi-rural setting, with farms, ranches, beaches and mountains nearby. Summers were spent traveling and experiencing the sights and activities of the United States. At a very early age these experiences sparked her interest in representing artistically what she saw.
In 1987, Jay Johnson of Jay Johnson’s Gallery on Madison Avenue on New York’s Upper East Side discovered Mears. Mears immediately became one of Jay’s top sellers. And her work continues to appear in galleries, museums, publications, exhibitions and private collections worldwide.
The appeal of Mears' work lies in her great attention to detail, brilliant colors, and strength of composition. Her passion for life and art become revealed with brush, paints and canvas in her country landscapes, still-lifes, roosters, cats, and other popular subjects. Each painting creates an aura of wonder that invites the viewer to participate in the fascination of the moment.
The History of Jigsaw Puzzles
The history of jigsaw puzzles is a puzzle, too! Most historical accounts attribute John Spilsbury with the invention of jigsaw puzzles (circa 1767) when he glued maps to wooden backing and cut along geographic lines to create jigsaw puzzle maps as a teaching aid. Other accounts give the Dutch credit for creating jigsaw puzzles a decade earlier. By the mid 1800s, Germany and France were cutting jigsaw puzzles with interlocking pieces. The industrial revolution brought us die-cut puzzles around 1890, and by 1909, jigsaw puzzles were so popular that Parker Brothers devoted an entire factory to jigsaw puzzle production.
Today, we are seeing a revival in jigsaw puzzle popularity among young and old alike. As an alternative form of entertainment in an electronic age, jigsaw puzzles offer a unique say to keep our minds sharp.
